Mata Traders offers chic, contemporary clothing to socially conscious consumers. Each garment is hand woven and block printed, preserving skills that have been passed down for generations.
The line is produced by two fair trade women's cooperatives in India, where they ensure a livable wage and safe and fair working conditions. From impoverished rural and urban backgrounds, they now can afford not only basic needs like food and clothing, but also what is often a luxury in India; an education for their children!
Thousands of children migrate to the megacities to find work and send money to their families. Providing income to women is a way to combat the problem of child labor at its roots, and stop the cycle of poverty. |

All Natural, ‘Ahimsa’ (non-violent) Silk Scarves
These luxurious and affordable pieces are perfect for the ethically conscious. Created out of tassar silk, they are 'ahimsa' or non-violent, meaning that the silk moth hasn't been harmed in the collection of the cocoon.
Made in India through the collaboration of three artisan groups - cocoon rearers, yarn-makers and weavers. Each step of the scarf's creation supports an artisan livelihood, from the rearing of the dried cocoon to the weaving of the yarn.
